Nuestro EnfoqueOur Approach
J.A Collective is a private contemporary art collection built through a selection of works drawn from different cultural and geographic contexts. It is founded on the conviction that art and education are essential tools for understanding the world, and the collection explores the connections between identity, memory, territory, and human experience.
Each work is acquired not only for its aesthetic value, but for the story it represents and the emotional resonance it awakens. These are pieces that speak to one another, exploring questions about who we are, where we come from, and how our experiences shape our relationship with the world.
The collection grows with intention and patience, guided by the search for works that preserve memories, express identities, and build a bridge between the past, the present, and the future.
Beyond collecting, J.A Collective was born from a commitment to education and cultural preservation. We believe that bringing art closer to new audiences and expanding access to educational opportunities are paths that share a single mission: to create spaces for learning, connection, and transformation.

Edición privada y familiarPrivate, family edition"I am a warrior, so that my son may be a merchant, so that his son may be a poet." — John Q.
Nuestra HistoriaOur Story
J.A Collective

I come from Saraguro, a place with its own language, its own memory, and its own history. My life has been a series of leaps between cities, countries, and cultures, a journey shaped by art, education, and the lessons that come with leaving one place to discover another.
From the beautiful little town of Saraguro to Santo Domingo, Mellen, Appleton, New York, Quito, Loja, Oshkosh, Kearny, Murcia, and finally Maastricht, each city became a collection of memories, questions, and dreams. Somewhere along the way, I began to understand that I could want more without despising what I already had. That I could leave and still love. That I could travel, laugh, and discover the world while carrying pieces of my past with me.
Amid all that movement, art became my constant reminder of where I came from, a refuge in moments of uncertainty, and a source of hope for what lay ahead. Education became my tool, the means through which distant possibilities slowly turned into something tangible.
J.A Collective was born from this journey. It exists to preserve the heritage that shaped me, to honor the stories that might otherwise be forgotten, and to give something back to the community from which I came. I have learned that our origins need not limit the distance we travel, and that the things we carry with us, our language, our memories, our history can become the very things that guide us forward.
The scholarship is an extension of that belief. It exists in gratitude to my mentors and grandparents, Dr. José Quizhpe and Lic. A. Cecilia Vacacela, whose own journeys toward higher education helped shape the values that J.A Collective represents today. Their example reminds me that education is more than an individual achievement; it is an opportunity to open doors for those who come after us.
Perhaps that is what this journey has taught me most: we do not move forward simply to leave our past behind. Sometimes, we travel far enough to understand it, to see it differently, and to return to it with something meaningful to offer.
J.A Collective is my attempt to preserve what made me, honor those who came before me, and help create possibilities for those who are still finding their way.

La historia completaThe full story
Parte I — El NiñoPart I — The Kid
How did it start? That's a good question. You never really know your identity until you're about to lose it. As a kid, he never valued the fact that he had something inherent, something so deep it was part of who he is. He knew he was different, but he thought everyone felt the same, until he realized they don't.
He always wanted to feel part of a group, not knowing he already was one. How naïve to think he could change what he was born with. But the strange part is, once he realized it, he thought: this is so cool. He has an identity so deep in his soul it will stay with him his whole life, while others might struggle their whole lives trying to find theirs.
That is how his journey started: realizing he can go anywhere, but his roots, his culture, his identity will live in him, because that is who he is. He is the one who will travel the world, carrying his roots with him. While he is Ecuadorian, he is not the traditional kind — they don't share the same traditions or the same words, because some of what they speak is native to his town. So most of the time, when he says he's from Ecuador, he realizes he isn't really from Ecuador.
Es algo más. Es de Saraguro. He is something cooler. He is from Saraguro.
He is a kid who jumps around, missing his mother, calling everyone a friend, asking for their attention. He wants to be heard and loved, but doesn't really know what he's doing. He is scared and unsure, but with a laugh and a smile he changes his world. His mom is his life. His life is his smile and charisma. He changes as he jumps.
Un salto. Dos saltos. Tres saltos.
Tres escuelas. Tres ciudades.
One jump. Two jumps. Three jumps.
Three schools. Three cities.
The jump seems fun, until everything changes. He is scared to jump, but he jumps anyway. His mom cherishes him, though he doesn't always like the way she does it. She can be rough sometimes, but with a smile and his charisma, he jumps again. The game seems fun. He is just playing.
Tres ciudades. Tres escuelas. Cree que es divertido. Three cities. Three schools. He thinks it's fun.
Family is there, but deeper inside, the game is changing him. One, two, three. Once again, repetition appears. The game adds a new rule, and the kid is now struggling to smile.
Uno. Dos. Tres.
El juego está por terminar.
Tres escuelas. Tres ciudades.
Donde debe empezar la diversión...
One. Two. Three.
The game is about to end.
Three schools. Three cities.
Where the fun must begin...
Parte II — La TransiciónPart II — The Transition
The transition. The game. The fun. Can you imagine how good he was? The fun, the game — it's no longer fun. One, two, and three are now becoming three struggles.
Uno. Dos. Tres. One. Two. Three. The kid no longer spins. He holds his mother's hand, hoping that everything is fine, but he is naïve to think he's only learning.
Una vez más.
Un viaje. Un país. Una nueva escuela. Un nuevo mejor amigo. Un nuevo hogar. Una nueva lucha.
One again.
One trip. One country. One new school. One new best friend. One new home. One new struggle.
Un año, y no logra adaptarse. Tiene miedo, y está perdiendo su identidad. Sin cabello. Nuevos amigos. Uno, dos, tres. Aprende. One year, and he cannot adapt. He is scared, and he is losing his identity. No hair. New friends. One, two, three. He learns. He is impatient. He is no longer aware of who he is becoming.
Uno. Dos. Tres. One. Two. Three. His mom takes the two, and the USA becomes the new hub.
Uno. Dos. Tres.
Un nuevo hogar. Un nuevo país. Un nuevo amigo. Un nuevo idioma. Una nueva vida.
One. Two. Three.
One new home. One new country. One new friend. One new language. One new life.
Tiene miedo. Está triste. No sabe cómo manejarlo. Llama a su madre. Ella lo cuida. Ella tiene esperanza. Ella espera. He is scared. He is sad. He doesn't know how to handle it. He calls his mom. She cherishes him. She is hoping. She awaits.
Una llamada. Un año. Una vida. Una experiencia. Tiene miedo. La transición vuelve a sonar. Una llamada. One call. One year. One life. One experience. He is scared. The transition starts to sound once again. One call.
Amor y paciencia. Tres transiciones. Una nueva vida. His grandparents' love and understanding. Two parents. Love and patience. Three transitions. One new life.
Love is into him. A new world has just opened up. He accepts his faith and his identity. He recalls his mom and his grandparents. Education is a tool that sets you free and makes you understand the world.
Querida mamá: nunca te entendí del todo. Eras joven e ingenua. Dear Mom, he never truly understood her. She was young and naïve. He has never been the perfect kid she wanted — the perfect grades, the perfect scores, excelling in every field. But he cannot blame her for it. She was learning, dear Mom.
The scars are still in his soul. They still hurt. But he forgives her. The more he grows, the more he realizes he is becoming like her. And becoming like her is a blessing. What a truly beautiful blessing it is to become a warrior, intellectual, charismatic, clever, honest, integral, and responsible person.
She is his hero, Mom, and his biggest teacher. She will be for life. Thank you for giving me the eyes to see the world you always wanted me to see. Thank you for giving me the education you always dreamed of. Thank you for giving me the support you always wanted. Thank you for giving me everything you could give me. And that is a blessing.
No somos perfectos. We are not perfect. We are just humans trying to figure out life. As she said: "the biggest wealth you could inherit is education."
Parte IV — El MundoPart IV — The World
One, two, three — he is still jumping, he is still smiling. One, two, and three, the jumps begin, the pattern aligns. He is still learning. School has finished; the next step is about to begin, and this is just the beginning.
He travels and travels, and the planes become airplane lessons. He still fights loneliness, but the traveling keeps him excited. The world has opened up. The kid remains, but time flies. In one blink, the world has changed. Santo Domingo is now a memory. Appleton feels like a dream. New York feels like a nightmare. Oshkosh feels like yesterday. New Jersey was just now.
But where is he now? One, two, three — the memories remain, time flies. Now he is in Spain, but really, now he is in the Netherlands — too much in the future, too much in the past, that he is forgetting the present.
Art has been the only reminder that he is still alive. Art has become his solace for the past and his hope for the future, and education, the tool.
Now the present is where he remains, and wishes to remain, because life itself must be a present — because life is an empty canvas where he is the main painter. Now that he has learned, he must start painting his present.
